LNG team of specialized marine service engineers hold a decade of dry-dock expertise

Atlas Copco Gas and Process secures first order with plug power

The Atlas Copco regional LNG specialized marine service engineers carry out a range of overhauls and other work on a Middle-East-based fleet of vessels carrying LNG to various ports around the world. In fact, the engineers have a long history of working on this fleet: they have been providing dry-docking services for it for more than a decade: all the way back in 2012, for example, they overhauled companders and boil-off gas compressor on 31 of the fleet’s LNG carriers at a nearby shipyard.

Since then, there has been a dedicated LNG specialized marine service engineers team based at the dry docks there, from where they manage their ongoing projects on the entire fleet. Conditions can be challenging, which can mean completing major overhauls of the vessels’ companders and BOG compressors within specified and often tight timeframes, frequently in the summer heat and in confined spaces. Often multiple teams of service engineers from different Atlas Copco entities need to be mobilised because there are multiple vessels docked in the yard at the same time.

After more than a decade working on the fleet, the LNG offshore specialized marine service engineers have a wealth of experience and skillset to take on whatever challenges the vessels present. In order to help facilitate this, the team collaborates extensively with partners and uses local facilities onsite. In addition, the team has invested in a local tool container, which is equipped not only with standard maintenance tools but also with special precision tools suitable for dry docking services in the Middle East.

Dry-docking services can throw up a number of challenges. But the LNG specialized marine service engineers have spent years building up their expertise and they are attuned to what is required for every overhaul.
