Rivet head styles

Head styles

  • Countersunk: head side of the joint is flush with top material surface
  • Flat, Pan, Dome: Provide good strength. especially in plastics or thin sheet metals; allow good head seating, especially when riveting thick or very hard materials; accentuate aesthetics of a riveted joint
  • Not all head styles are available on all rivets -- please contact our experts for more information

Rivet coatings

  • Rivet coating is a fundamental part of the riveting process and needs careful consideration before a selection is made. We make coatings that are qualified by our customers.
  • Standard coatings are used in the majority of applications to protect self-piercing rivets when applied to steel, aluminum or other products. Mechanical plating provides a galvanic barrier between the steel rivet and aluminum panel preventing corrosion between the two materials. Coating types are typically zinc/tin or zinc/tin/aluminum (AlmacTM).
  • New coatings, compatible with an increasing number of applications and environmental conditions, are being researched as part of customer-specified programs.

Materials for riveting

  • Standard Rivet Material: Special grades of steel wire - forged, hardened and tempered to provide optimum joint properties in the full range of application materials.
  • Special Rivet Materials:
    • Austenitic stainless steel - used for joining ductile stainless steel sheets.
    • Martensitic stainless steel - for tougher materials that cannot be joined with austenitic stainless steel rivets.
  • Rivet Hardness: Rivets are produced in a range of hardness levels to match the piercing requirement for different material grades. We work closely with our customers to establish the correct rivet hardness and geometry for the application.

Packaging

  • Loose rivets are supplied in flexible plastic packaging either in bottles that fit our loose rivet feeder or in bags. All batches are bar-coded and fully traceable, and there are poka-yoke options for bottles to ensure the wrong rivets are not used in your process.
  • Cassettes are used with our tape feed systems for manual applications where maximum mobility or rotation of the rivet setter is required. Cassettes hold from 200 to 800 rivets.
  • Spools are used with our tape feed systems that hold from 4,000 to 10,000 rivets, depending on the size of the rivet, and are used on manual, automated or robotic tools. Re-usable plastic spools are available for applications where a return loop permits economic recycling and refill. There is a poka-yoke option where the center hub is configured with a mechanical key to prevent incorrect rivets from being loaded to a tool.
