Together for a smart and trustworthy power supply
For many years Atlas Copco Rental has been supporting Nyrstar Budel, the only zinc producer in the Netherlands, with temporary power supplies.

This time, we have been confronted to a new challenge: a temporary supply during the maintenance and inspection of a transformer as well as a motor control center room. For this job some power sources had to be shut down, however, a direct online water pump with a 160kW required power supply had to remain in operation.
We instructed Nyrstar’s technical department during the construction so they could handle the generators themselves. This made it simple for them to synchronize the 2nd generator and start it safely. This synchronization was executed in a 100% automated manner by the QC4002 control unit, standard on QAS500. Also the load sharing is controlled by this unit, resulting in a 50/50 distribution of the load between the generators.
Han Hermans of Nyrstar sees a big advantage in the parallel operation of the two QAS500 sets:
If anything occurs with one of the units, the other set automatically takes over without any power interruption. This offered certainty during the operations, especially since we had to completely disconnect the main power supply!
Moreover the possibility to shut down and restart the units easily and fast ensured significant fuel savings. An extra saving was on transport and handling: QAS500 units are lighter than QAC1000 container set. For Han Hermans the proposed solution was a perfect match to Nyrstar’s demand:
Atlas Copco Rental has been a constructive partner and delivered exactly what we needed for this project, both technically and budgetary. This definitely offers a perspective for future projects.
