Reaction force and ergonomics: How to keep your workers safe and happy

It’s no secret that fastening tools, in general, are rather notorious for injury-causing torque reaction forces if not used safely and correctly. Torque reaction force is a phenomenon that is caused by the turning force required to tighten a bolt or screw.

What is reaction force?

Reaction force refers to the force that is exerted in response to another force, following Newton's Third Law of Motion, which states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. In manufacturing and industrial applications, reaction forces are particularly important in the context of tools and machinery that apply force to an object.

To counteract this torque reaction, operators must apply an equal force on the handle of the tool in the opposite direction. Without devices, accessories, or specific tools that were developed to absorb torque reaction, prolonged exposure to torque reaction can cause a handful of serious injuries on operators.

Uncontrolled reaction force over a prolonged period can cause a number of musculoskeletal injuries. Repetitive stress injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome – these are some of the body-injuries that can happen when your operators are exposed to the frequent and high torque reaction force. This is the reason Atlas Copco places such a strong emphasis on ergonomics in the workplace.
