Increasing productivity and efficiency in low torque manufacturing processes is not only possible, but it’s likely easier than you might have expected.

Boost productivity and efficiency in MicroTorque applications using vacuum pickup accessories

6 minute(s) to read

The Issue:

In traditional low torque assembly processes, screws of widely varied sizes must be handled. More commonly, operators are sifting through bins filled with screws that they must pick up by hand and place onto the bit of the screwdriver. Not only is this an incredibly time-consuming process, but it can be a difficult one too: the smaller the screw, the trickier it is for the operator to properly handle them.

The Answer:

Utilizing vacuum pickup accessories with MicroTorque (MT) tools.

For the sake of this article, we’ll explore three vacuum pickup accessories for MT fastening that maximize productivity, optimize plant efficiency, and boost operator ergonomics

Vacuum adapters from Atlas Copco

MicroTorque vacuum adapters are invaluable to low torque fastening processes. As stated above, the smaller the screw, the more difficult and tedious they are to pick up and attach to a screwdriver. However, if a screw is not properly positioned on the bit, common but costly quality issues such as misaligned or cross-threaded screws can occur during production.

Our newest and most efficient product within this accessory category are the Quick Change vacuum adapters. Designed with simplicity and durability in mind, these adapters are easily screwed over the bit of the screwdriver and they truly live up to their name. The quick change feature allows for fast, simple bit changes without having to disassemble the entire attachment. With vacuum adapter options for both current controlled and transducerized MT screwdrivers, Atlas Copco has you covered.

Screw dispensers

Another handy accessory that optimizes low torque production processes is a screw dispenser. Atlas Copco’s SDS Screw Dispenser presents a single fastener for the operator to use. The screw is then picked up by the operator using either a vacuum adapter or a magnetized bit. With screws being presented in quick succession, your operators can move quickly and efficiently through their tasks without having to handle small, tricky screws.

The SDS Screw Presenter is easy to refill and does not require stopping production to do so. It’s a flexible, extremely useful solution, perfect for both automated and manual low torque assembly lines.

The Smart Vacuum Pump MT

Aligning with Smart Connected Assembly, our vision for Industry 4.0, the Smart Vacuum Pump MT plays a key part in maximizing productivity and securing proper control of the screw pick-up process. This is an Atlas Copco accessory that provides the vacuum pressure required to pick-up screws from a presenter. It integrates easily with and communicates directly to the Atlas Copco MTF6000 controller, allowing for direct feedback, error-proofing, and rework during tightening.

The Smart Vacuum Pump MT is a flexible solution; it can be integrated into both automated and manual MicroTorque assembly stations. When used in automated applications with a MicroTorque screwdriver, a vacuum adapter, and the MTF6000, the vacuum pump automatically detects missing or tilted screws during production using the vacuum sensor built into this accessory.
