Nitrogen gas can preserve and maintain food quality and increase the shelf life of fresh food.

Why nitrogen gas is used to preserve food and packaging?

In food production have used the nitrogen gas for verity systems and processes such as packaging and food manufacturers of the industry standard for non-chemical preservation. In the food and beverage segment, nitrogen gas is well known for the solutions to preserves freshness, protects the nutrients, and prevents aerobic microbial growth.

Nitrogen is an inexpensive also suited for variety usage under the condition of monitoring for purity and potential contaminants depend on the type of use and the requirement of purity levels to ensure safety.

Nitrogen gas can preserve and maintain food quality and increase the shelf life of fresh food. It is the main role of packing specialist and food manufacturers to protect the nutrients and food quality standard because oxygen can oxidize the food material and ingredients. Some type of food is particularly susceptible includes fatty meats, fish, vegetable, and some of the ready-to-eat product. To modify the atmosphere of the packaging to ensure that the products remain safe and high quality for consumers.

How can nitrogen gas apply for food industry?

Nitrogen gas used to protect the nutrients and food quality standard because oxygen can oxidize the food material and ingredients. In some application, we use nitrogen gas used to modify the atmosphere of the packaging to ensure that the products remain safe and high quality for the consumer.

What is the controlled atmosphere storage of apples?

The controlled atmosphere storage is the system to maintain fresh, perishable fruits and vegetables are stored in narrowly environment conditions which extend the useful market after harvest by controlled nitrogen, carbon dioxide, moisture and temp. In another way, they used for ultra-low oxygen (ULO) when Nitrogen is controlled.

Nitrogen Application for Powdered milk package

  • Dairy supply: 98% are imported
  • Dairy Market: Powdered Milk Foil Packs (Fortified, Infant Formula)
  • Major Suppliers: Using mix liquid and PSA N2
For the application of blanketing of foil packs, they used pressure 3 - 5 barg and purity more than 99.9% to extend the shelf life of products 18 months and product more attractive.

The Complete project Set-up:

  • Nitrogen generator (Model: NGP100+) 2 units @ 24.9 m3/hr
  • Oil-free compressor (Model: AQ37VSDFF) 2 units with compressor utilization of 1.5
  • Piping system (AIRnet SS304 Pipes)
  • Receiver / Buffer Tanks

The comparison of current consumption with nitrogen generator loop system for annual energy cost that we can support them to save money around 10,578,711.9 baht then the customer gets the return within 1.15 year for this project investment.

Nitrogen Application for Apple Storage

The apple storage facility to employ the technique was simply by means of an airtight room.

The apple storage facility to employ the technique was simply by means of an airtight room.

Apples take in oxygen and give off carbon dioxide as starches in the flesh change to sugar. In the sealed rooms of the professional storage facilities, this respiratory process reduces the oxygen, thus slowing the ripening process

Controlled Atomosphere Storage

The objective of the apple storage is to extend the useful marketing period or seasonality of product after the harvested to maintain the value intact and the consumer can enjoy apples and pears well past harvest. Certain varieties of apples can be stored up to 12 months and pares can be stored up to 10 months

The process of the storage to guarantee that the product is a non-chemical process involved. For long-term storage of vegetables and fruit involved inhibiting of the ripening and ageing process to retaining flavour and quality.

The success projects

In this project, we recommend vacuum-PSA is utilized in >100 Nm³/h because the advantage of VPSA is the possibility to also recirculate (30% quicker in pull-down), in addition to injecting. The specification of the machine depends on the apple variety, below the atmospheric requirements of extended storage:

  • Temperature: +0 - +5 °C
  • Relative humidity 90 – 95 %
  • N2 level 97 – 99 %, typically 99 %
  •  CO2 level increased to 2 % (active carbon scrubber, regenerated with ambient air)

In these conditions, the ethylene production (ripening) of apples is eliminated and respiration minimized. N2 can be recirculated and done by VPSA (~50 % of cases).

The first step after the room has been filled with apples is cooling down. Cooling down lasts 5-7 days. After this is the so-called oxygen level pull down from 21 % down to 5 %. This Pull-Down phase lasts typically 2-5 days, depending on apple variety. N2 generator capacity is typically 60 Nm3/h on average
