What is Diffused Aeration?
In diffused aeration, oxygen is mixed with the wastewater to allow the anaerobic bacteria to digest biosolid particles in the water. The purpose is to introduce air into the water, which increases the wastewater's dissolved oxygen content. The benefits of this include removing items that produce both taste and odors, including gases, metals like iron, and other substances.
How does diffused aeration work?
In this process, compressed air (powered by aeration blowers) is pumped through diffusers and releases bubbles below the wastewater’s surface in order to ensure that the bacteria receive a continual supply of air. As these oxygen bubbles rise through the wastewater to the surface, they mix with the water, thereby increasing the amount of dissolved oxygen in the wastewater. This helps keep the bacteria suspended in the water, and the longer they're suspended, the more solids they can break down!
Types of diffused aeration systems
There are 2 types of diffused aeration systems: fine buble and corase bubble.
- If you're searching for a high decree of aeration, a fine bubble aeration system will be the ideal choice.
- However, if increasing the dissolved oxygen content in your wastewater is the goal, you would do best to look at a coarse bubble aeration system.
