In the Lab: The Rusted Bolt

Tune in as Jason Benford, Atlas Copco’s Tightening Services Lab Manager, offers viewers a look at the distinct difference between tightening a new bolt and an old, rusted bolt. Using a power tool pre-programmed at 500 Nm, Jason measures the clamping force that each bolt will generate for its load set.

For the new bolt, viewers will see that it takes just about 35,000 lbs of clamping force to tighten the bolt. Once the baseline clamping force is established with the new bolt, Jason moves on to the old bolt in order to see if the rust on the bolt creates more friction and a lower clamping force. The results for the rusted bolt? 14,000 lbs of clamping force is what it takes tighten this bolt!
