Air Compressors in Artificial Snowmaking

While natural snowfall might seem essential, snowmaking technology powered by air compressors ensure that even in the face of unpredictable weather or warming temperatures, ski resorts can maintain optimal conditions. Artificial snow, created with precision and efficiency, has become indispensable to sustaining winter recreational activities.

How Does Snowmaking Work?

Snowmaking replicates natural snow formation through a relatively straightforward yet effective process. Here is how it works.

 

Water is drawn from nearby reservoirs, ponds, or municipal supplies and pumped under high pressure to the top of the mountain where the snow is needed. Once it has reached the mountaintop, compressed air then breaks the water into fine droplets. Using snow guns, pressurized air and the droplets are propelled into the cold air. On their way to the ground, these droplets form snowflakes.   The air pressure of the equipment can be adjusted by operators to control snow texture from powdery layers to dense foundations.

 

This cyclical process also benefits the environment. As the artificial snow melts, it returns to the reservoir, ready to be reused for future snow production. 

Why Artificial Snow?

Artificial snow offers advantages over natural snowfall: 

 

  • Durability and compactness: As it contains a larger amount of water than ordinary snow, artificial snow is denser and more resilient, providing a reliable foundation for winter sports.
  • Extended season: Facilities can open earlier and operate later into the season, regardless of snowfall patterns. Meaning that they are not affected even in less-than-ideal conditions, such as steadily warming global temperatures and less than sufficient snowfall amounts.
  • Consistency: Snowmaking ensures that trails and slopes maintain optimal conditions, enhancing guest satisfaction. 

Fun fact: In a magnifying glass, it is easy to see the difference between an ordinary snowflake and an artificial flake, since it looks like a small snowball. 

Key Considerations for Snowmaking Compressors

Not all compressors are suited for the unique demands of snow production, a process that requires significant energy to convert water into snow. In fact, air compressors systems account for 75% of snowmaking costs. While costs is a critical factor, quality should drive your investment, as high-quality compressors ensure a reliable and uninterrupted snowmaking process. , it is important to keep in mind that cost shouldn’t dictate the quality of the air compressors that you invest in; rather, the higher the quality of the compressor, the better the chance that your snowmaking process will continue without issue.
