Large production floor, high output demand, multiple point-of-use vacuum pumps - in a situation like this, efficiency is a top priority for manufacturers. But how do you achieve it?  The answer is a centralized vacuum system.

Centralized vacuum systems are an efficient set-up with vacuum pumps located in a single utility room - away from the main production floor – supplying vacuum centrally to the application process. Most vacuum processes generally supply vacuum at single points of use – with each machine having a dedicated vacuum pump. This results in high energy consumption, noise and heat emissions. These factors also create an unfavorable working environment on the production floor.

That’s why, centralization of the vacuum supply is best when multiple processes or machines require vacuum. Here are 6 reasons why a centralized vacuum system is a good choice.

  • Energy savings - Central vacuum systems need fewer vacuum pumps, in most cases one primary pump, than a decentralized vacuum supply dedicated to the individual machines. This cuts down on energy consumption. Plus, not all applications need high pumping speeds at the same time, a central vacuum system can be controlled and can adapt to varying demand. When using Atlas Copco vacuum pumps with Variable Speed Drive technology, you can even achieve energy savings up to 50%* or more. You also save on energy costs generated from air-conditioning normally required to lower temperatures with point-of-use pumps on the production floor.

  • Flexibility and reliability – With a central vacuum system you can add or decrease capacity easily.  Redundancy is shared across the production facility and can help achieve higher uptime and still have fewer vacuum pumps than a decentralized supply. A set up like this also offers higher flexibility due to on-demand vacuum and makes expanding the system in the future easier.

  • Proper load distribution - The central vacuum system controller will adapt to meet production demands. The system will distribute work to the pumps efficiently and evenly.  Our Atlas Copco vacuum pumps come with an intelligent HEX@GRID controller which makes remote monitoring and control even more precise and convenient.

  • Cleaner and quieter workspace – When you remove all vacuum pumps from your production hall, you also remove their noise, heat and emissions. This makes the production floor cleaner, safer, free of any contaminants and additional heat sources. And floor hygiene is extremely important for food-related and sensitive applications.

  • Longer pump lifecycle: In a decentralized vacuum setup, all the pumps are running at full power during operational hours. But the vacuum pumps in a demand-driven central vacuum system run at a constant pressure which means less wear and tear. This increases the lifetime of the vacuum pumps as a result and extends the maintenance intervals.

  • Easier maintenance –A centralized vacuum system eliminates the need for costly breakdowns and downtimes. You will save on maintenance and spare parts costs with fewer installed pumps than many point-of-use machines.

Which industries need a centralized vacuum system?

Centralized vacuum systems are best suited for operations that have different processes happening at the same time and require multiple vacuum pumps.

Industries like food processing and packaging, woodworking, glass bottling, pick-and-place applications etc. can greatly benefit from this solution.
