Atlas Copco South Africa Managing Director takes the lead in creating a safe working environment
October 24th 2020 marked 75 years since the inception of UN day. Atlas Copco is one of many UN affiliated companies that contribute to the Global Sustainablity Goals.
Our Atlas Copco South Africa Managing Director, Wendy Buffa-Pace embarked on a work environment safety tour to ensure we adhere to global best practice. As an organisation, Atlas Copco actively contributes to achieving seven out of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals. The objective of our safety tour was to showcase our commitment to improving The Way We Do Things and the importance of having a safe work environment, conducive to higher levels of productivity.
Wendy’s first term in office began in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. When commenting on this period, she mentioned how she has seen first-hand the positive effects felt by organisations that prioritise the safety of their employees during this time. As a local Atlas Copco entity, organising facemasks, hand sanitiser and observing all prescribed COVID-19 safety precautions were just a few of the many safety procedures the team worked tirelessly to provide during this time. Creating a safe work environment has proven to be beneficial to our local organisation as its clear our employees know how highly we value them and the high value we place their safety. Mental health awareness talks were also hosted for our employees, to help ease stress and anxiety levels that the COVID-19 pandemic caused.
“Atlas Copco is an organisation that campaigns for safety and well-being in all business functions. The safety and well-being of all stakeholders is vital. This is why we set ambitious standards for workplace safety” said Wendy. “Furthermore, it especially important for leaders in all organisations to be directly involved in ensuring that safety targets are not only set out, but are put into practice. Having a safe work environment is not only for our employees but also for all valuable stakeholders with whom we interact”concludes Wendy.
The work environment safety tour comprised of risks assessments at our Boksburg premises and evaluating the COVID 19 safety precautions put in place to protect all stakeholders. This was the first of many tours of its kind to ensure long-term compliance. The safety tour is one of the initiatives we are embarking on as means to ensure that we contribute to the 2030 global Transformation Agenda for Sustainable Development.
