Sustainable power solution for Finnish wastewater treatment plant

Hermanninsaari serves as a major wastewater treatment plant in Porvoo, Finland, processing over four million cubic meters of wastewater annually from the city's central planning areas through a sophisticated biological-chemical process. The station required a robust temporary power solution while the old high-voltage connections and transformers were being dismantled and replaced by more efficient low-voltage systems.

Considering the large scale of the wastewater treatment plant and the necessity for continuous operation, the power solution needed to be highly reliable and effective. Atlas Copco opted for one of their TwinPower+ QAC 1350 generators, which are designed with dual generators housed in a single container.

This innovative setup delivers both redundancy and high capacity, allowing each generator to operate efficiently across varying power loads—from full capacity to lower levels. It ensures consistent performance under diverse conditions by automatically switching to the second generator to maintain uninterrupted power during outages or when demands surpass the capacity of a single unit.

Atlas Copco provided comprehensive support throughout the project, including the installation of a local call modem on the TwinPower+ generator, enabling direct communication with the on-call service technician for rapid deployment in case of any issues. This support was essential, as any significant downtime could have resulted in the flooding of the surrounding area.

In addition to technical support, Atlas Copco also addressed specific operational needs such as fuel monitoring and re-fueling services, guaranteeing the generators operated efficiently and without interruption.

The deployment of the TwinPower+ generators not only supported the wastewater treatment plant during a critical upgrade but also demonstrated environmental benefits. The TwinPower technology offers up to 8% fuel savings and significantly reduces CO2 emissions compared to traditional setups.
