7 tips for picking the perfect containerized compressor room

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

Many industrial companies are increasingly turning to containerized solutions as an efficient and flexible alternative to building their own compressor rooms. These plug-and-play compressor rooms are also the ideal solution for companies that have to ramp up their production very quickly. In addition, containerized compressor rooms have become an indispensable tool for resource industry operations in remote, barren locations.

This wide range of applications means that there is no one-size-fits-all containerized compressor room. So what should you be looking for when choosing the air system that is right for you? Here are some of the things you should consider.

1. Custom design versus standard product

Some companies have such unique requirements that they prefer to have a completely custom-designed compressed air container. A tailor-made containerized compressor room is built specifically for the task at hand and the ambient conditions of the work site to which it is deployed. However, custom design is costlier, and the compressor room may not be available for a long time because all of the custom equipment has to be tested and certified. Standard containerized compressor rooms on the other hand can be delivered quickly and as a rule are less expensive. The downside is that they are not designed for a specific tasks, circumstances or requirements, and often offer limited customization options. With the AIRCUBE, Atlas Copco has found a way to get the best of both worlds. Using a modular approach, it allows you to pick among a wide range of proven products (and smart add-ons) that our specialists will then assemble in a sturdy container for you. The result: A plug-and-play containerized compressor room that can be delivered quickly and is put together for the task at hand.

2. Reliability

Containerized compressor rooms, especially those used in the resource sector, often have to operate in some of the toughest conditions on the planet. In addition, because they are deployed to remote locations, repairs or procuring spare parts can be a challenge if there is a problem with the air system.

That is why reliability is one of the most important characteristics of containerized compressor rooms. You want to make sure that they work well in any weather and temperatures. AIRCUBE containerized compressor rooms from Atlas Copco, for example, are designed to withstand temperatures from 0°C to 40°C. Containers that can operate in even lower temperatures (as low as -40°C) or very high ambient conditions (as high as 40°C) can be supplied on demand. With many regions, including Europe, experiencing increasingly severe climate events, the toughness of these containers makes them a perfect solution for outdoor operations.

3. Efficiency

While reliability is a key issue for the resource sector, efficiency is equally important for manufacturing facilities that need containerized compressor rooms to quickly ramp up production.

The primary goal for these companies is to quickly meet a surge in demand. However, keeping operating costs down is another key objective.

To help achieve both goals, Atlas Copco customers can choose to have particularly energy-efficient compressed air equipment installed in their container, for example compressors and dryers using variable speed drive technology, which sharply reduces energy costs and contributes to a greener production.

4. Quality components

A compressed air system is only as good as its weakest link. To get the most out of your containerized compressor room, you should therefore ensure that every piece of equipment is of the highest quality.

In light of the importance of compressed air for production processes, choosing a sub-par product could turn out to be an expensive gamble.

That is one of the reasons why so many customers turn to Atlas Copco – a brand they know and trust.

5. Equipment from a single source

In order to avoid compatibility issues, you should consider getting all of the components of your containerized compressor room from a single source. The AIRCUBE, for example, is a complete air system that includes everything from the compressor to the dryer to any specific add-ons you might need. With your entire system built to Atlas Copco standards, this ensures a smoother operation and avoids unpleasant surprises at an inconvenient time.

In addition, getting all equipment from a single source will also guarantee an enhanced ease of use and smooth maintenance.

6. Know industry standards and make sure your equipment is properly certified

Containerized compressor rooms are used everywhere on earth – from the Australian Outback to the Arctic. Many of the countries to which they are deployed have their own standards and regulations, so you should ensure that the equipment you want to use has the proper certifications.

Just imagine having your operation shut down because your compressed air system does not meet a particular quality, safety or environmental standard.

To avoid any such problems, make sure that the products you use in your containerized compressor room have the proper certifications – like the components in Atlas Copco’s AIRCUBE containerized compressor rooms, which are all CE certified.

7. Talk to an expert

If you follow these tips, you are well on your way to getting a containerized compressor room that gets the job done without causing you any problems down the line.
