Why you should choose a screw type air compressor over reciprocating compressor

Due to the low cost and extensive availability, reciprocating air compressors are utilized in a variety of service industries. Many operators prefer reciprocating air compressors because they either do not fully understand the difference between a rotary screw and a reciprocating air compressor and are only familiar with what they've always used or they simply are not aware of the alternatives.

Rotary screws provide many advantages over reciprocating air compressors mainly on these factors - initial and operating costs, energy efficiency, duty cycle, and service intervals including the following:

  • Work more quickly: In general, rotary screw air compressors deliver more air than reciprocating compressors of the same size. To accommodate higher air needs and decrease air pulses generated during the compression process, reciprocating compressors require air reservoir tanks. Rotary screw compressors do not produce the same type of air pulses as reciprocating compressors and can provide huge amounts of air when needed without the use of a reservoir tank.

  • Work for a longer time: Rotary screw air compressors operate at 100% duty cycle. The duty cycle of a compressor is the amount of time it can run continuously without pausing to prevent overheating in a certain period of time. For example, if a compressor can run for 60 minutes without stopping, it has a duty cycle of 100%. It has a duty cycle of 50% if it can only run for 30 minutes out of 60. Most reciprocating compressors can only operate at a 50% duty cycle. This means that the compressors can only run for half the duration, limiting your capacity to complete the task. A rotary screw compressor is designed to run continuously so that you can complete your task without interruption.

Further, the screw air compressor works on the principle of positive displacement wherein the male and the female rotors rotate in opposite directions, and the air is getting trapped in between these 2 rotors.

As the air moves along the rotors, the volume space between the rotors shrinks, resulting in an increase in the air pressure but reducing the volume of the air which is known as compressed air that is being displaced to the output.

As these screw air compressors are generally not equipped with any valves and have no mechanical forces that cause unbalance, these solutions can be extremely efficient for various applications. This is because a screw compressor works at a higher shaft speed and compresses a large volume of air with small exterior dimensions.

Besides this, our screw type air compressors offer multiple benefits, including:

Increased reliability

Atlas Copco screw compressor offers no duty cycle while being designed to operate at ambient temperatures of up to 46 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, our screw air compressors function to ensure zero loss of capacity over time, which makes them extremely reliable.

Easy-to-install

Atlas Copco screw air compressors are available with multiple configurations, they are easy to install being fully plugged & play units. Moreover, they are offered with a smaller footprint and can be placed inside the compressor room near the wall or even in a corner. The footprint can be further reduced by opting for "full-feature" variants where the compressor & the dryer are placed on a single skid. Essentially, these machines will have an integrated refrigerant dryer (dew point at compressor outlet of +4°C).

Environmentally friendly

We as Atlas Copco are committed to sustainable productivity & hence our screw air compressors are designed in order to have less oil carryover. The requirement of frequent filter replacement is also brought down considerably. The new generation Atlas Copco variable speed screw-type compressors can save energy of up to 50 per cent over conventional fixed speed designs.
