'Staying connected with colleagues is also really important when working remotely' - a year in review with Michael Fleming
What was it like to begin a new role during a pandemic?
Like starting anything new there is always that feeling of nervousness. But luckily for me the whole team greeted me with open arms and enthusiasm to help me settle in quickly. "Learning new systems can be a trial but the other members of the team really helped me with it and made me feel part of the team from day one.

How has it affected development and training?
Starting a new job right at the beginning of a pandemic and almost immediately going into lockdown was a real challenging time. I spoke with some of my colleagues and told them about any concerns I had and how I was feeling. All of them really put my mind at ease. "In some ways it helped me learning the systems and concentrate on training. It has been difficult learning new ways to communicate and very little site visits is difficult, but it’s something that I and many other people have had to get used to. I long for normality to return at some point soon and we can get back to face to face meetings.
Have you taken on any tips or tricks that has helped with working remotely?
It's very difficult to stay motivated when you are stuck at home all the time, so I set up my own time management system. I set myself targets to achieve every 2 hours. I have also got into the habit of standing for 15 min after each hour to stretch my legs. "I also find I am walking a lot more which helps to clear the mind. I always close everything after work until the next day. I was lucky that I was able to turn my shed into a home office. In addition to being an enjoyable project it also helps to separate my work and home life. I would recommend this if you have the space.
What have you learned?
I have learned a lot about myself during this pandemic. It has certainly helped me focus better and become more organised. I have learned to adapt my usual practices to enable me to respond to the challenges posed by the pandemic. Taking a walk if I feel things getting on top of me or when dealing with stressful situations has definitely benefited me. It allows me to allows me think more clearly. "Staying connected with colleagues is also really important when working remotely. Whether it is a quick call or text, a virtual coffee morning or remote team building exercise it all helps in keeping a positive mindset.
