C & L Industrial Ltd. participate in the Galway Rally 2017

Congratulations to our distributor, C & L Industrial Ltd., who competed at the Galway Rally 2017. It was a weekend to remember for Eugene Meegan and the Whelan family as both C&L Industrial Atlas Copco BMW 1M’s came in 5th and 6th overall, 2nd & 3rd in class and Richard and James Whelan received the Galway Motor Clubs top award, the Brian Thornton Cup.

It wasn’t all plain sailing as it may seem. Eugene and Sarah struggled all day Saturday with handling problems on the rear of their newly built car. The back arm on the car being loose from the first stage until the last service of the day caused them to spin three times, two spins causing them to stall and one clipping a wall, losing almost a minute and a half throughout the entire Day 1.

Sarah Whelan , Assistant General Manager, C & L Industrial Ltd.

Sunday came but so did the ice, stage 10 and 11 being cancelled due to the freezing conditions.

So the battle recommenced on stage 12 with the stage shortened to 5km. Eugene and Sarah’s newly repaired BMW getting back into the swing of things with a fastest time between the crews but helped by intercom problems for Richard and James.  Stage 13 went back to winning ways for Richard, taking 0.7secs from his sister and Eugene leaving a 12 second gap for the final two stages of the event, a seemingly difficult mountain to climb with such short stage mileage ahead.

Stage 13 saw Eugene and Sarah nick another 4secs off them, leaving just 8secs to play for on the final stage.

It was that last stage where Eugene finally got comfortable in the new car, taking 13secs off Richard and James but obviously the pair only had the Brian Thornton Cup in mind, backing off and easing their BMW to 6th Overall, just behind Eugene and Sarah who pipped them to the 5th place.

It was a great personal battle over the weekend, both crews delighted to get to the end of a tricky Galway International Rally and with that, top Galway Crew and 2nd and 3rd in Class 14 respectively.
