The technology powering the dual-speed GA FLX compressor
With the GA FLX, Atlas Copco has introduced an entirely new rotary screw compressor type: the dual-speed compressor. It operates at two speeds, one for maximum capacity and a minimum speed to reduce energy consumption during unload. As a result, it is up to 20% more efficient than a traditional fixed-speed compressor. That is because it experiences much lower transient and unload losses. And thanks to its next-generation engineering, it also offers optimal air delivery at every pressure set point.
In this article we will take a closer look at its key components:

The drive train makes up the beating heart of every compressor. The GA FLX’s consists of Atlas Copco’s patented rotary screw element and a Ferrite-Assisted Synchronous Reluctance motor. This combination meets the requirements of IEC IE5, the most stringent standard for motor efficiency available today.
The entire drive train is IP66-protected from dust and dirt. It is also oil-cooled to ensure maximum efficiency. The bearings are oil-lubricated. The drive train has no gears or belts, which means the GA FLX compressor experiences no transmission losses.
The GA FLX features the Neos Next, the electronic gearbox developed by Atlas Copco for use in our compressors. It is this component that allows the GA FLX to modulate its speed down to a minimum when air demand lowers and the compressor goes into unload.
Users can freely set the pressure of their GA FLX between 4 and 13 bar. The Neos Next ensures that the compressor will always run at the optimal speed for the selected pressure to provide the highest air flow.
To safeguard reliable performance and uptime, it is IP54-protected from dirt and dust.
The GA FLX offers a wide range of options that allow customers to customize their compressor to their specific needs, priorities and conditions. These include RsXD oil, filters and a tropical thermostat.
For significant additional energy savings, a dedicated energy recovery system is available. Fully integrated into the GA FLX's canopy, it allows users to recover up to 80% of the excess heat that the compressor generates.
The GA FLX comes as standard with the Elektronikon® Touch, Atlas Copco’s most advanced controller. Thanks to its built-in SMARTLINK connectivity, users enjoy remote monitoring, performance insights, and optional EQ central compressor control.
The GA FLX is much smaller than a traditional compressor. In fact, it is up to 50% more compact than the fixed-speed GA alternative. That means it takes up much less floorspace. For additional installation flexibility, forklift slots allow for easy maneuvering. And easy access panels ensure quick service and longer uptime.
As you can see, Atlas Copco developed and built the GA FLX dual-speed compressor to deliver energy savings no fixed-speed compressor can. If you have questions about the GA FLX’s engineering or working principle, don’t hesitate to reach out. Our experts are always ready to assist you.
