Ideal timing for Atlas Copco Rental’s newest addition, the PTS 800 Tier 4 Final, for offshore project in Canada
25 March 2019
Antwerpen, Belgium, August 23, 2016 - When a leading Canadian contractor, needed dry, oil-free air for their partnership on an offshore project, they trusted Atlas Copco Rental to provide a solution that fitted their requirements and exceeded expectations.
The job took place on an oil field off the coast of Canada. It had been developed as a stand-alone concrete gravity based structure (GBS) and is estimated to produce over 700 million barrels of recoverable resources. This GBS is designed to store more than a million barrels of crude oil.
The project includes offshore surveys, engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction, installation, commissioning, development drilling, production, operations and maintenance and decommissioning.
Atlas Copco Rental’s customer was selected for the pre-commissioning of the living quarters, the platform structure and for the assembly of modules on the GBS.
To successfully carry out their job, they needed dry, oil-free compressed air that was energy efficient and locally compliant to meet stringent air quality and documentation requirements.
The call for help was received at an ideal time.
They needed oil-free utility and instrument air at -40 °C /°F dew point. Additionally, they wanted something portable and reliable.
At the time, Atlas Copco Rental Canada had just received the newest addition to their fleet: the PTS 800 Tier 4 Final, delivering 100% oil-free air at medium pressure and at a lower air flow. It has a smaller build on a wheeled frame for improved mobility. As a bonus, it also has an impressively small environmental foot print.
The capabilities of this new air compressor combined with one of our desiccant dryers made a perfect solution for the subcontractor air requirements: 700 CFM @ 100 psig.
Collaboration began in February 2016. Initially scheduled to be a two month rental for the living quarters pre-commissioning, it was extended by four months for pre-commissioning of the platform structure.
The most challenging part of the process was the documentation including the TUV certification, CRN and CSA documentation. There was also documentation needed relating to Atlas Copco Rental’s quality procedure which was approved by the main project management consultant.
