Lagoon Aeration

Lagoon aeration is similar to the activated sludge process
but is used primarily in rural areas with small to large-sized plants.

What is Lagoon Aeration?

Similar to the activated sludge process, lagoon aeration is typically used in rural areas with small- to large-sized plants. A series of shallow earthen basins (lagoons) act as the aeration basins and holding tanks – it’s in this treatment pond that biological oxidation of wastewaters occur. Although lagoons are often equipped with surface aerators, there are several diffuser systems available specifically for these applications. A well-designed diffused air system uses approximately half as much energy as surface aeration.

Types of lagoon aeration?

At its simplest, lagoon aeration is the process that uses oxygen and mixing to create an aerobic treatment environment.
There are two types: surface aeration and diffused aeration.
Surface aeration is characterized by mechanical equipment floating on the surface of the water, while diffused aeration uses aeration blowers to release bubbles from a point at the bottom of a lagoon.

Benefits of lagoon aeration?

Lagoon aeration is one of the simplest and least expensive waterwater treatment systems, and as mentioned above, is excellent as a lower-cost wastewater treatment option for those in more rural areasLagoons typically cost less to construct and operate; they're also simpler to maintain than other systems. While lagoon aeration requires more land than other wastewater treatment methods, this usually isn't an issue in the rural parts of the United States. An added benefit is that they're able to handle light and heavy use , which is ideal for communities that rely on tourism & rental properties.
