The Perfect Bubble Requires The Perfect Solution

When Sleeman Sports Complex was in need of a solution to ensure safe landing at the bottom of their water ramp, our sales engineer Duncan Vaughan, used his skill and ability to find the most suitable solution. The magic of the right bubbles!
Sleeman Sports Complex in Queensland is home to a year round ski jump. The facility is a first for the Southern Hemisphere. The combination of the ramp and swimming pool is designed to stimulate a snow ski ramp. The required bubbles in the pool are critical for a safe soft landing.
"The project was very challenging with only 3 things to go on: Number of nozzles, nozzle size and required bubble size." said Duncan Vaughan, sales engineer.
However, through the skills, experience, innovative thinking and our large portfolio range, we found a solution for the team at the facility - a bubble aeration system which helps soften the landing for athletes to reduce potential.
Fast facts
- The facility was built to stimulate snow ski jumps
- The highest ramp is almost 40m
- Winter Olympians train at Sleeman Sports Complex all year round
- Athletes are able to reach speeds of almost 70km/h and launch up to 17m above the water
- A bubble aeration system helps soften the landing for athletes to reduce potential injury
The Solution: Two GA55VSD Air Compressors
"I developed a method to calculate the total air requirement which proved to be accurate and ensured the correct bubble size and duration," said Duncan
The GA VSD compressors were selected due to their many benefits including:
- Even on start up, the compressors doesn't draw more than full load. Compressors are able to make the most of the power available.
- A high power factor enables the maximum use of the power available.
- If any of the calculations were slightly out then adjustments can be made to keep within the power available, thanks to the compressors VSD technology.
- Pressure settings can be set anywhere from 600 kPa to 1300 kPa offering maximum flexibility for fine tuning the system.
Filters for water quality
Along with the two compressors, Duncan also chose our UD+ filters as it is critical to maintain water quality in the pool. The Atlas Copco UD+ filters were chosen to remove oil down to 0.001 mg/m³ with minimum pressure drop.
"The rest is history and the system proved it's worth," concluded Duncan.
