Air Compressor Safety Checklist

Handling large equipment that use air compressors might be a daunting task for a few, especially if they aren’t well versed with the safety measures required for it. The air compressor uses a complex mechanism with a variety of smaller components functioning together and relying on each other. We’ve got you covered with a step by step Air Compressor Safety Checklist.

While managing a compressed air system one must take care of the following safety measures. Compressed air mechanisms need to be provided with the same amount of caution that you use with any other high-powered machinery. Any misuse or lack of proper precautions can result in risks. It is essential that operators take proper training and adhere to the safety protocol to mitigate any possible damages.

There’s a couple of things a compressed air systems operator should be careful about - electrical mishaps, fire mishaps (fuel/gas powered air compressors), high air pressure, unwanted noise, etc. We’ve compiled a guide to take you through a list of measures to be taken while operating a compressed air system.

Here’s an Air Compressor Safety Checklist

General Safety:

  1. Ensure proper operator training
  2. Ensure compliance with the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration)
  3. Check component pressure ratings
  4. Ensure relief valves, drain valves, and shutoff valve are functioning properly
  5. Check guards on all moving parts like coupling housings, flywheels, belts and pulleys.
  6. Ensure there is adequate workspace air circulation
  7. Check and maintain workspace humidity levels

Pre-operation Safety:

  1. Check for adequate oil-levels
  2. Ensure proper lubrication
  3. Check the air filter health
  4. Check and ensure all air connections are properly fitted and tight
  5. Check all drain valves are closed
  6. Check that the outlet valve is open
  7. Check that the canopy and cubicle doors are closed and locked
  8. Read the operating instructions

Overall Safety:

  1. Ensure all valves are functioning at the right pressure
  2. Ensure air intake is proper and maintained
  3. (Ensure and maintain air compressor speed according to the user manual)
  4. Drain air receivers (timely) periodically
  5. Ensure air hoses and fittings are in place and functioning properly
  6. Check for leaks

Along with these you must also maintain and check regularly for any changes in the surroundings of your machine, voltage supply, air source and air inlets. If any of these change or are faulty you must reach out to an expert immediately.

We hope this article helped you take the necessary steps towards air compressor safety and maintain them for efficient delivery.
